China finally has a supercar thanks to the Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) called the Hyper SSR. As reported by CarNewsChina, the 1,207 horsepower monster features butterfly doors and a claimed 0-62 mph acceleration time of 1.9 seconds thanks to its three electric motors. It aims to have the performance and luxury appointments to run with the best exotics in the world, and it doesn't hurt that the design reminds us of an Acura NSX mixed with a Ferrari 458.
Originally a part of the Aion line, GAC decided to spin off the Hyper line into its own performance sub-brand to give it a greater air of prestige. It certainly helps to justify the sportscar's near $230,000 price tag, which puts it in the same league as some of the best performance brands in the world. Let's just see if it's worth the hype.
SSR is an acronym for the words "Super, Sport, Race," and it's offered in three variants: Hyper SSR, Hyper SSR Sprint, and Hyper SSR Ultimate. The attractive coupe feels like a conglomeration of many different exotic cars we've seen over time, which is practically a hallmark of a Chinese-built vehicle these days.
You know what they say, though, if you're going to borrow, borrow from the best. The company obviously knows what they're doing, as it's included all the accouterments you could expect from a high-end exotic, like carbon fiber accents galore, bespoke wheels, carbon fiber rotors, massive red calipers, and an interior bathed in leather, Alcantara, and more carbon fiber. The company says the aero on the car creates 220 lbs of downforce, though it didn't say at what speed.
The interior is relatively simple with a large 14.6-inch touchscreen in the center and a smaller 8.8-inch screen above the steering wheel on the dashboard that functions as your instrument panel. The steering wheel is particularly rectangular, with a nice little bit of orange at 12 o'clock. It seems better than a yoke steering wheel, but we also imagine, due to its design, this car has a pretty aggressive progressive steering system.
GAC knew this new vehicle couldn't be all looks and no show, and the claimed specs are ridiculously impressive. There are somewhat conflicting reports of how much power the vehicle really makes, with some saying 1,207 horsepower and 907 lb-ft of torque and others going up to 1,224 horsepower. What we do know is the company says the lower trims will scoot from 0-62 mph in 2.3 seconds, whereas the top trims will hit the claimed 1.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph.
There aren't many supercars that can come close to these acceleration times, with the Lotus Evija and Tesla Roadster being some of the few to come to mind. The vehicle has a 75 kWh battery pack that helps it achieve a claimed range of 314 miles on the CLTC cycle, meaning it should achieve a lot less if the EPA ever gets its hands on it. We don't envision that ever happening, though, because we doubt the model will ever be sold outside of China, where the first models were reportedly delivered late last year.
